Åbjøra River
The Åbjøra river valley and surrounding mountains are blessed with some of the most breathtaking nature and scenery in Norway, and a rich fauna and flora. Frequent sightings of elks, foxes, lynx and capercaillie, black grouse and ptarmigan are common. Even brown bear and wolverine are present in the mountainous area to the east, closer to the Swedish border.
The total length of the Åbjøra River system is approx. 70 kilometres (50 miles) and the salmon are able to run its length in to the Abjora Lake and beyond due to some cleverly built salmon ladders. The main fishing stretches are found on the first 25 kilometres. The lower part of the river, locally called the A River, from the mouth till the waterfalls at the Horstad Estate, flows gently, only interrupted by some croys on the left hand side and leads down to the high-tide pool. It is very good fly water and easy wading. The middle part of the river, above the Horstad falls, has a number of long pools and good fly fishing stretches combined with rapids, good pools and a mixture of wading conditions. The upper part of the river runs through a magnificent canyon, with deep holding pools, but there are some magnificent fly-fishing stretches too. Be aware that this part of the river has some difficult access and is most suitable for more adventures anglers.
