Salmon fishing on the Numedal River
The Numedal River ranks among the major Norwegian salmon rivers with relatively stable catches of around 1,500 - 3,000 salmon per season, 10 years average of approx. 3,600 salmon and mixed with occasional unpredicted 'bumper' seasons with over 7,000 salmon. The average weight is around 4.5 kilos (10 lbs.).
The Numedal River draws on significant catchments and both its length and water volume makes it a powerful river - and the third largest in Norway. This provides a stable water flow during the fishing season making it very well suited for salmon fishing.
The Brufoss Fisheries Trust, an association of around 40 farmers on both sides of the river, organises the fishing on the upper 12 kilometres of the salmon running stretch, which is around 65 kilometres from the estuary at Larvik to the hydro power station at Hvittingfoss.
The Brufoss Fisheries has a long tradition in providing a well organised and reasonable sport for its anglers in addition to facilitate the opportunity for other than the fishermen to experience the nature, scenery, flora and fauna along the riverbanks.
