Salmon fishing on the Reisa River

Salmon fishing on the Reisa River

Reisa River, with a catchment area of 2,692 square kilometres, has a total length of 120 kilometres from the Raisjavri Lake (444 metres above sea level) to reaching the sea near the village of Storslett. The river weaves its way through narrow ravines within the Reisa National Park before cascading down the Imo Falls and winding its journey down the beautiful Reisa Valley. From the Imo Falls, the landscape develops into a splendid, gradually widening canyon. A number of tributaries cascade from the cliff edges - the most magnificent being the Mollis Falls (total height of 269 metres). The lower part of the Reisa valley is fertile agriculture and forestry land.

The valley and its river provide an amazing setting; this is one of the world's most beautiful salmon rivers, with nearly 90 kilometres of pure angling delight in wild, untouched nature. At the same time, an angler has the chance to catch one of the largest Atlantic salmon - probably only matched by fish from the neighbouring Alta River to the north.

The Reisa is quite a powerful river with a constant average 83 m3/second water flow throughout the year and stable water level during the fishing season, 1 July till 31 August. Early July is the right time on the lower parts of the river to challenge the 50-pounders which come fresh from the Arctic Ocean. Thanks to the efficient river boat service and skilful guides, any part of the upper reaches can also provide dramatic sport and big catches in unrivalled scenic settings throughout the entire season.

The Reisa River Gorge

Over the last decade, good river management, carefully monitored quotas and catch-and-release to sustain good spawning stocks, have ensured a satisfactory yield of fry, parr and smolt and resulted in a gradually increased return of salmon. The river is systematically climbing the 'best river' league table in Norway.

As with more and more rivers in Norway, the Reisa Riparian Owners Association encourages and supports a strict quota system throughout the season as well as catch-and-release of large hen fish. Any angler can take home smaller fish 'for the pot' but if so, fishing has to stop for the day to restart the following day.
